Many veterans and their families in Reading, PA, and around Berks County, are not aware that many veterans who served during wartime are eligible for Aid & Attendance (A&A) benefits, as well as many other legal rights. The Law Office of Scott C. Painter can help you determine eligibility, assist with paperwork, help you navigate the process, and protect your legal rights to access health, travel, housing, voting, and more.
Painter Law wants our brave men and women to regain what they fought for: their freedom and independence. These wounded heroes want to not just live, but to live with dignity as contributors to society. They deserve medical research, advocacy, and civil rights for all people with disabilities — to enjoy a better quality of life, and to fulfill their potential.
The following is information about the Americans with Disabilities Act and other laws that protect veterans’ rights — and the rights of all people living with a disability.
Americans With Disabilities Act of 1990 This act was passed in 1990. The intent is to remove architectural, employment, and attitudinal barriers for individuals with disabilities, granting greater access to housing, travel, and voting rights.
Air Carrier Access Act In 1986, Congress passed the Air Carrier Access Act (ACAA), which guaranteed that people with disabilities would receive consistent and nondiscriminatory treatment when traveling by air.
Social Security Most paralyzed veterans qualify for Social Security Disability Insurance [SSDI].
Accessible Voting Voting is one of our most important civil rights, but paralyzed veterans and other people living with disabilities are faced with accessibility challenges. Organizations like Paralyzed Veterans of America want to ensure you have all the information you need to cast your vote safely and securely by helping you make your voting access plan.
Accessible Design Paralyzed veterans need accessible, barrier-free environments and access to public buildings and structures as a fundamental right. This requires architectural design that makes public and private buildings, structures, entrances, and other facilities wheelchair-accessible.
Fair Housing Veterans require efforts to enforce and extend laws and regulations that advance accessibility in housing — both publicly-funded and privately-financed.
Travel The number one issue raised by many paralyzed veterans is related to accessibility during travel. For example, airplane restrooms need to be more accessible and there is much to be done.
