Veterans with Disabilities Are Encouraged to Participate in Sports

Many Berks County veterans who have suffered debilitating injuries may believe their active days are over. The sudden transition from a physically strong, vibrant lifestyle to one of limited mobility can be disheartening and shocking. There are a lot of adjustments that need to be made, physically and emotionally. The Veterans Administration’s Office of National Veterans Sports Programs and Special Events provides veterans with opportunities for health and healing through adaptive sports and therapeutic art programs. These specialized rehabilitation events aim to optimize veterans’ independence, community engagement, well-being, and quality of life. The programs are built on clinical expertise within the VA, with essential support from Veteran Service Organizations, corporate sponsors, individual donors, and community partners.

While our Reading-Area veterans’ physical and mental health are of utmost importance, their financial health is vital as well. The law office of elder law attorney Scott C. Painter, P.C., is open and ready to assist you with veteran’s benefits, such as asset and protection trusts, and aid and attendance benefits.

If you want to get involved in sports programs and really want to “go for the gold,” The VA National Veterans Sports Programs & Special Events Office provides a monthly training allowance for Veterans with disabilities who are training in Paralympic sports or Veterans with disabilities who are selected for or competing with the national Olympic Team, as authorized under 38 U.S.C. 322(d). Of course, there are stringent qualifications:

A Veteran athlete must also be nationally or internationally classified by his or her respective Paralympic sport federation as eligible for Paralympic competition in that sport

OR

A Veteran athlete, with a service-connected disability rated 30 percent or greater by VA, must be selected for a national Olympic Team for any month in which the Veteran is competing in any event sanctioned by the National Governing Bodies of the U.S. Olympic Sport, in accordance with Public Law 114-223.
